HEALTH COVERAGE — Non-Insured Health Benefits and Bear River First Nation Band Members
The NIHB program provides eligible First Nations and Inuit with coverage for a range of medically necessary health benefits when these benefits are not otherwise covered by:
- private health insurance plans
- provincial/territorial health insurance plans
- social programs
The benefits provided under the NIHB program include:
- prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications
- dental care
- vision care
- medical supplies and equipment
- mental health counselling
- medical transportation (to access medical services not available on-reserve or in the community of residence)

The CHR at the Health Center is here to help assist you with any information and services that are provided by Health Providers that include Dental, Vision, Prescription Drugs, Medical Supplies & Equipment and Mental Health.
- Why is my dentist billing me for services or why is some things covered and some aren’t?
(with regards to dental the CHR can help you providing you give consent/permission to the Dental Predetermination Center in Ottawa to discuss your dental concerns on your behalf, if not there is nothing the CHR can do).
- When am I eligible for glasses and exam? What’s covered and what’s not?
- Some brand name prescriptions are not covered but generic brands are what do I need to do to get it covered? Brand name may need justification as to why you require this brand. OR How come NIHB does not cover yearly prescriptions? The normal quantity dispensed shall be the entire quantity of the drug prescribed. A maximum 100-day supply should be considered for those circumstances where the patient has been stabilized on a medication and the prescriber feels that further adjustment during the prescribed period is unlikely.
- I’m required to have dressings for wound care, I need a wheelchair, what do I need to do to receive one?
- I need mental health services where do I go to find a therapist? How may services are covered for one year?
- I can also help with medical transportation reimbursement to your medical appointments or arrange transportation through our medical driver located on reserve.
- If you are requiring any medical or dental service be sure to let them know in advance that you are covered through Non-Insured Health Benefits and provide them with your status card number.
